The original summer blockbuster is back on the big screen where it belongs, celebrating its 50th Anniversary. Newly remastered, color graded and remixed for 7.1 surround, this all time classic looks and sounds like it was made today. A rogue great white shark terrorizes a small beach town at the height of summer, prompting the local Police Chief to enlist the help of a grizzled shark fisherman and a shark expert to track down and kill the beast. What could have been a throw-away B movie had the good fortune to be directed by Steven Spielberg when he was just starting out. Plaugued by mechanical issues with the shark, Spielberg opted for a more Hitchcockian approach, making the ocean the thing to be feared, not just the shark. The result is a masterpiece of suspense that remains gripping and exhilirating 50 years later. Stranded on a boat in the middle of the ocean waiting for the shark to work also allowed the three main actors Roy Schieder, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss to truly embody the frustration and uneasy camraderie that feels 100% authentic--because it is--anchoring the terror with real human drama. And let's not forget John Williams pulse pounding, iconic score. Not only did he create a 3 note motif that appears in your head anytime you're near the water, he also found the thrill of the adventure within the terror. If you've only ever seen Jaws on the small screen, it is truly a film meant for the movies, and takes on a whole new energy when seen in a theater.
